Male Fertility
Although it is widely assumed that infertility is a ‘woman’s issue’, around 50% of infertility among couples are traced to problems related to male fertility. Hence it is important that male fertility as an issue be confronted early with the right line of testing and treatment.
Any concerns relating to male fertility involve basic evaluation by a specialist that would include:
- A full medical and reproductive history, details of surgeries carried out and medications being taken.
- Lifestyle assessment including, smoking, drug use and exercise regimen
- Physical examination.
Among the tests for male infertility problems, semen analysis is the most common testing procedure. If the sperm count is low, the blood testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin levels are also tested by the fertility specialist. A urinalysis may be conducted to trace white blood cells which may indicate an infection. The urinalysis also determines if there is sperm in the urine, which would then be indicative of a problem with ejaculation known as retrograde ejaculation.
At East Bay Fertility Center, the Male Factor related to fertility is evaluated and the fertility treatment options include:
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
- Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESE)
- Epididymal Sperm Aspiration
